Cosmic Shift

The nature of the change taking place, and the indications of how the 21st century will be different from the 20th, seem to me to be growing. Decentralization, networking, doing more with less... Here's a video from Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo which interviews two people. One suggests that loosely organized teams working wherever they happen to be to uncover news stories will be more effective than old-line "on the bus" news organizatios. The other discusses the clash between those who want to control information versus the democratizing force of free information used freely. Have a look: Personal Democracy Forum Part 2

Wagon Wheel

Been a fan of this Old Crow Medicine Show tune. Here's the story plus a way to hear Dylan's original partial song which got out as a bootleg. Thank God for bootlegs!

Did the Egyptians Invent Natural Capitalism?

Well, my friend Alexei Panshin tipped me to this years ago -- that a Frenchman was convinced the pyramids were really made out of poured concrete. It made a lot of sense, since there are no partial blocks of limestone or tools lying around and the nearest quarry was hundreds of miles away. Now, it seems, an American scientis concurs.

What's particularly interesting to me is the suggestion at the end of the article that this isn't about the past, it's about the future. For us moderns, concrete is one of the biggest energy sinks and contributors to carbon emissions. But the Egyptians did this stuff with human power and an intuitive sense of chemistry. What we could learn!

Catching a Wave

Everybody knows the music business is changing. Radio Free Earth and Handknit Records are part of that. In our small way -- but with big dreams about how we want to shape our music and let it be heard throughout the cybersphere -- we are cultivating our web site, this blog, our myspace and other outlets.

This article from last week's New York Times Magazine is all about how indie artists are coming on-line and using the Neb to bridge the gap between artist and audience that had always been bottled up by Da Biz. Sex, Drugs and Updating Your Blog It's exciting times.

If you're reading this, then you're already a part of what we're trying to do here, and hey, we want to hear from you, too. We call our fans Radio Free Earthlings, and you ought to drop us a line and be counted. Help us spread the music around!
